Howell, Michigan Phil

Name: Phillip Davis Campbell III (AKA “Mayor Phil”)

Residence: Howell, MI. USA

Age: 32

Profession: Private-school teacher and the mayor of Howell, MI

Favorite hobbies and pastimes: I love writing. I have actually authored two self-published books, both of which grew out of the writing club I chair. The first, Tale of Manaeth, is a fantasy novel geared towards young adults.  “Written in the epic style of such classics as the Silmarillion and the Iliad, the Tale of Manaeth tells the story of a young princess reluctantly thrust into a position of leadership among her people and faced with a hostile and powerful foreign aggressor. Through much hardship and many savage battles she leads her people to triumph and becomes the foundress of a nation.” Okay, that is the promo from the book cover, but it does sum things up well. The second book, Paladologies, is a sequel to Tale of Manaeth.  I also play the guitar.

What websites you would like us to promote for you? My Facebook page as mayor of Howell is here. I also work during the summer for a wildlife control company called Creature Control, which can be found at www.creaturecontrol.net. And the website for Tale of Manaeth is www.taleofmanaeth.com.

When did you first hear about the town of Phil Campbell, Alabama? I heard about Phil Campbell when the original 1995 convention was scheduled. My father and I were invited but regrettably could not attend.

Were you able to attend the Phil Campbell Hoedown of 2011? Unfortunately, no.

You are a Phil Campbell. What do you think of your name? It’s an awesome name. Campbell is a name of power and prestige, a “Phillip” means “lover of horses.” That’s freakin’ awesome.

Tell us a little about yourself, as many words as you like:  I do a lot. During the school year I am a teacher at two private institutions. The first is St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program in Ann Arbor, which uses a supplemental curriculum based on the Western classical tradition that homeschooled children take in order to enrich their homeschooling education. I also teach for a company called Homeschool Connections.com, which is a web-based Catholic homeschooling company that brings Catholic homeschoolers together from all over the world for live, interactive classes.

I also chair a writing club for teenage boys called the Penmoot Society, where we basically read our stories to each other before ripping them to shreds; it is based on the writing club “The Inklings” of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

During the summer I work for a locally owned pest and wildlife control company called Creature Control where I manage the office staff and generally do dull, administrative things.

Though it is not really a job per se, I should also mention that I am currently Mayor of my hometown of Howell, MI, which has a population of about 10,000. I’ve been Mayor for about a year now and spend about 20+ hours a week troubleshooting problems residents are having, attending ceremonial functions, mulling over budgets and blue prints, attending Council meetings and in general getting my hands dirty in all the various affairs of local government. It’s a lot of fun, but boy is it a lot of work!

There is a lot more I could say about myself, if talking about oneself excessively wasn’t a sign of pride. But, if I had to say one thing, it would be that everything I do and every decision I make I try to do based on the principles of the Catholic Faith, which has been and always will be he pillar and bulwark of my life.
